Beagles are dogs known to be a purely English breed. However, some sources indicate that their predecessors lived in Greece in pre-Christian times. Yet, the name of the breed appeared in no place else than the British Isles, where they might, however, have arrived yet with Roman conquerors.
Historically Ossian, a Scottish bard, first mentioned Beagles in the 3rd century. Later, in the 15th century, the Mother Superior, of the Sopwell Nunnery, referred to the dog in her written work. Beagles also received mention in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The breed's name, derived from the Celtic-Gaelic term
'beag', stands for 'small'.
Beagles were excellent and intelligent fox- and hare hunters. They had a very keen nose and a wonderful way of trailing and calculating the position of the game in the hunting field, and that raised the dog to the rank of royalty. Beagles enjoyed favor of royal authorities and Kings for centuries.
In the 19th century, with the decline of hunting, the image of the Beagle dog in the minds of people started inclining toward that of a home pet. These dogs are amiable and non-aggressive, they get on perfectly well with other dogs and animals and, Beagles unlike other dogs, are not suspicious of strangers.
In the 19th century, the breed began to spread beyond the boundaries of the Great Britain. Immigrants brought Beagles to America. However, due to improper breeding, they were very different from pure English Beagles; the American variety was considerably smaller.
In 1885, the American Kennel Club first registered Beagles and drafted the breed standard. In 1888, National Club registered the breed. Later Beagles started spreading around Europe, and in 1914, a Beagle Club became established in France. Now Beagles uses include custom service in contraband detection operations.
