At present, these sturdy and muscular dogs can be both successful gundogs and wonderful family pets and companions. In temperament, they are bold, active, energetic, possessing great stamina and determination. Smart and affectionate towards their owners, they make wonderful pets if properly trained. This breed is not good at obedience, but all hounds need obedience lessons, because they tend to take after an interesting scent forgetting about the master’s commands. This can lead to accidents or getting lost. It’s necessary to keep such hounds in a securely fenced yard and never let them run free in public places.

As far as the breed history goes, this is an ancient breed developed as a scenting hound. These hounds are mentioned in the documents dating from 400 B.C. In the 1300 and 1400s, these dogs were very popular in the monarchy. These hounds were favored by ladies who could participate in hunting by following them on foot, not on horseback. Two types of hounds for hunting rabbits, hares and quail existed by the 1700s: the Southern Hound and the North Country Hound. They vary in size, but their functions and temperament are very similar.
